The station was opened in 1852 as the London terminus of the Great Northern Railway and was restored between 2008 and 2013 by Network Rail with support from the Railway Heritage Trust. The station is Listed Grade 1 and stands in the King's Cross & St Pancras Conservation Area. GNR
