Dido Elizabeth Belle 1761-1804 Born into slavery, Belle was entrusted to her uncle William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. She was educated and brought up as a gentlewoman at Kenwood. Lord Mansfield confirmed her freedom and provided her with an outright sum and an annuity, making her a heiress.
